The story behind Mythral Expanse Legal and the people who make it happen
We didn't start out as some massive law firm with a hundred lawyers. Actually, it began in a much smaller office just off Bay Street back in 2008. Three of us had worked at big firms and honestly got tired of the same old approach - you know, treating international deals like they're just paperwork to shuffle around.
Started with three partners and a vision to do corporate law differently. We took on our first cross-border M&A deal and learned more in those six months than we had in years at our previous firms. Honestly, we made mistakes, but our client stuck with us because we actually cared about the outcome.
Opened our first international partnership in Hong Kong. This wasn't just about expansion - we realized that to truly help Canadian companies trade globally, we needed boots on the ground in key markets. The time zone differences were brutal at first, but worth every late-night call.
Added a dedicated intellectual property team after seeing too many clients get burned in tech deals. The digital economy was exploding and companies needed lawyers who actually understood what they were protecting. We've been neck-deep in IP ever since.
COVID-19 hit everyone hard. We shifted our entire practice remote and discovered we could serve clients even better. Trade agreements got complicated with supply chain chaos, but we helped dozens of companies navigate the new normal. Turned out flexibility was our strength.
We're now 24 lawyers strong with partnerships in five countries. Still in Toronto at our Bay Street office, but working with clients from Vancouver to Singapore. The core mission hasn't changed though - make international corporate law accessible and actually useful.
The people who'll actually be working on your files
Been doing M&A deals for 15 years. Started in New York but moved back to Toronto because, honestly, the work-life balance is way better. Handled over $2B in transactions last year alone. Outside the office? I'm probably at a Raptors game or hiking the Escarpment.
Trade agreements are my thing. Grew up between Lagos and Toronto, so cross-border stuff is literally in my DNA. I've negotiated deals in 20+ countries and can tell you which customs officers are sticklers and which ones are cool. Call me if tariffs are giving you headaches.
Started as a software engineer before law school, so I actually understand the tech I'm protecting. Patent law, copyright, trade secrets - I've seen it all. Fun fact: I still code on weekends. Helps me stay sharp and understand what our tech clients are dealing with.
Corporate compliance sounds boring, I know. But when you're facing regulatory issues in multiple jurisdictions, you'll be glad I'm on your side. I've helped companies avoid millions in fines and keep their operations running smooth. Also make a mean bulgogi if we ever do a team lunch.
Cross-border litigation specialist from Montreal. When disputes can't be settled at the table, I'm the one in court. Won cases in Canadian, US, and international tribunals. My approach? Be prepared for anything and never underestimate the other side. Works every time.
Contract guy through and through. I read the fine print so you don't have to - though you probably should anyway. Negotiated hundreds of commercial agreements and can spot a bad clause from a mile away. Irish heritage means I'm stubborn when it comes to protecting clients.
Corporate governance keeps companies running right. Board meetings, shareholder agreements, regulatory filings - I handle the stuff that keeps you compliant and out of trouble. Also fluent in Hindi and Punjabi, which comes in handy more often than you'd think in Toronto's business scene.
Newest member of the team but don't let that fool you - graduated top of my class at Osgoode. Currently working across different practice areas to find my niche. Loving the international aspect so far. Ask me about crypto regulations, I did my thesis on it.
Not just words on a wall - these guide everything we do
Look, we've all heard lawyer jokes about billing and vague explanations. We're not about that. You'll get straight answers about costs, timelines, and realistic outcomes. If something's gonna be expensive or complicated, we'll tell you upfront. No surprises on the bill, no legal jargon to confuse you into nodding along.
Our clients appreciate knowing exactly where they stand, even when the news isn't great. That trust is worth more than any extra billable hours we could squeeze out.
We're Toronto-based but we don't think like a local firm. Every client deal touches multiple jurisdictions, different regulations, various cultural expectations. You can't just copy-paste a US contract and hope it works in Singapore - trust us, we've seen that disaster happen.
Our team's lived and worked across different countries. We get the nuances that can make or break an international deal. Plus, having partners in different time zones means someone's always available when you need us.
Legal perfection is great in theory but sometimes you just need something that works. We've walked away from deals that looked good on paper but would've been nightmares to execute. And we've structured agreements that broke some traditional rules but perfectly fit the client's actual needs.
The goal isn't to write the prettiest legal document - it's to get you from point A to point B without headaches. Sometimes that means creative thinking, sometimes it means telling you when to walk away.
We're not transaction processors. Yeah, we close deals, but we also remember that you've got a business to run and probably stress keeping you up at 3am. Most of our clients have been with us for years - some since we opened in 2008.
That continuity means we understand your business model, your risk tolerance, your goals. We're not starting from scratch every time you call. Plus, it's just more fun working with people you actually know and like.
We've turned down cases where the client wanted us to push ethical boundaries. Doesn't happen often, but when it does, we're out. There's always another client, but you can't get back your reputation once it's gone.
This also means we'll tell you when something's legally possible but morally questionable. Your call ultimately, but we're gonna give you our honest take. Sleep at night matters more than any single deal.
Laws change, markets evolve, new technologies create new legal challenges. If we're not constantly learning, we're falling behind. Every lawyer here does ongoing education way beyond what's required by the bar.
We've also learned from mistakes - ours and others. Those lessons get shared across the team so we don't repeat them. Humility's underrated in this profession, but it's kept us sharp.
